Team Green paints the town in Swansea

It was great to welcome members of  'Team Green' to the 'works' Christmas Party.
We enjoyed a splendid meal at La Brasserie restaurant in Wind Street, Swansea, followed by a little clubbing and dancing.
Here are some photos from the night -

Yes, I got the groom to the church on time!

What a fun day!
I turned from Secret Millionaire to Secret Chauffeur.
Here's the full story -

Secret Millionaire Kevin Green turned into the secret chauffeur to help make a wedding day dream come true.
Mr Green, 50, donned a chauffeur’s hat and turned up in his cherished Aston Martin to help do the honours for Swansea couple Kevin and Wanda Harding.
“As requests for help go, it was pretty unusual,” admitted Mr Green.
“By all accounts, Wanda had been on the motorway when I overtook in my Aston Martin, which has a cherished number plate YE54 KEV (Yes for Kev).
“There were only a few days to go before the wedding, but she thought it would be a wonderful surprise to ‘borrow’ the car to drive her new husband Kevin to church.
“She tracked me down through a mutual friend and she was persuasive enough to convince me to hire myself out as chauffeur for the day.
“The couple agreed to hold a special collection at the church for the Make A Wish Foundations, knowing that it is the main charity I support. I am an Ambassador for Make A Wish and was only too pleased to help out.”
The couple were married at St. Samlet Church , Llansamlet, and will be making their future home at Kelvin Road, Clydach.
The reception was held at Sketty Hall, Swansea, and the couple are honeymooning in Egypt.
Kevin works at Tata Steel. Wanda works for Dor2Dor in Skewen.
Mr Green, a Burry Port-based multi-millionaire and wealth coach who is also one of the UK’s largest private sector landlords, “It was such an unusual request, that I felt I had to oblige.
“I had to go on E-Bay on the internet to find a chauffeur’s hat to make the outfit complete. But it was great fun and I’d like to wish Kevin and Wanda every happiness in the future. A big thanks also to everyone who contributed towards the Make A Wish fund.”
Mr Green, who is also a Big Ideas Wales role model for young entrepreneurs, is accustomed to springing surprises. He sprang several during his time on the Channel 4 Secret Millionaire show.

Christmas Party Night for 'Team Green'

'Team Green' will be in the big city of Swansea this evening.
It's the annual 'works outing' for my team members.
It's been the most successful year yet for 'Team Green'.
The fun begins on Wind Street in Swansea later.
There will be dinner, drinks and dancing . . .
Should be fun!

Chauffeur's hat on today!

I'm putting on my chauffeur's hat today and doing my good deed for the day.
I'm answering a distress call from a bride who's been unable to find her dream wedding car for her big day.
So I am going to the rescue in my Aston Martin.
Hope the dress isn't too big and that we'll be able to squeeze the bride in!
Hopefully, I'll have some pictures later.
The bride and groom are very kindly donating a fee for my services to the Make A Wish Foundation.
The charity is, of course, very dear to my heart and I work as an ambassador for Make A Wish.

My views on Boris Johnson’s ‘greed is good speech’

The BBC were on the phone early this morning seeking my views on Boris Johnson’s ‘greed is good speech’. Here is a press release on what I had to say on the matter . . . .

Multi-millionaire businessman Kevin Green today gave a cautious welcome to London Mayor Boris Johnson’s ‘greed is good speech’.
“As with all things from the mouth of Boris, his speech was a bit of a curate’s egg – good in parts,” Green said.
“You can agree with some of what he says, but strongly disagree with the rest of it.”
Boris Johnson used the annual Margaret Thatcher lecture to declare that inequality is essential to fostering ‘the spirit of envy’ and hailed greed as a ‘valuable spur to economic activity’.
The London mayor called for the ‘Gordon Gekkos of London’ to display their greed to promote economic growth.
Johnson said: “I don't believe that economic equality is possible; indeed some measure of inequality is essential for the spirit of envy and keeping up with the Joneses that is, like greed, a valuable spur to economic activity.”
But he added: “I hope there is no return to the spirit of ‘loads-a-money’ heartlessness – figuratively riffling banknotes under the noses of the homeless. And I hope that this time the Gordon Gekkos of London are conspicuous not just for their greed, valid motivator though greed may be for economic progress, as for what they give and do for the rest of the population, many of whom have experienced real falls in their incomes over the last five years.”
Burry Port based Green, 50, runs a massive private property portfolio and other enterprises in a number of business sectors.
He said: “Boris is always entertaining and provocative.
“Greed is a vice and no-one with a moral compass should be advocating that.
“But there is nothing wrong in having a passion and a highly-tuned enthusiasm for making money.
“Money makes the world go round and anyone who makes lots of money can use that money carefully to sow the seeds for other businesses and people to develop and generate more wealth in the economy.
“I work as a wealth coach helping inspire other people to become millionaires. There is nothing wrong in being ambitious and wanting more wealth for yourself. But you also have to be tuned in to the real world and appreciate there are people out there less fortunate than yourself.
“I work closely with selected charities such as the Make A Wish foundation. Generating money is fine as long as it is linked to your passion in life. Helping others is also important.
“I was once homeless and I know what it is like to be looking for the next crust. I am a self-made millionaire and am proud of what I have achieved. But I also recognise and appreciate that there are people less fortunate than myself.
“Being enthusiastic and passionate about your work is fine. Being greedy is something else.
“I work very closely with young business people as a Big Ideas role model for the Welsh Government. I like to talk to young budding entrepreneurs and stress to them that it is only right and proper to operate with strong ethical standards and a strong moral compass in the current economic climate.”

My views on the current RBS debate . . .

The current publicity about RBS bank has struck a nerve.
Here is a press release which is going to the media this afternoon -

Multi-millionaire businessman Kevin Green today joined the growing clamour for action against banks who put the squeeze on small businesses.
“I am appalled and disgusted by the actions of RBS,” said Green, who runs a massive private property portfolio and other enterprises in a number of business sectors.
“Conversations with other businesses throughout Wales suggest that RBS isn’t the only culprit here.
“But they are, of course, the ones currently in the spotlight and receiving all the media attention.
“The treatment of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) by RBS is nothing short of scandalous.
“Stories of the bank exploiting the small print in loan deals abound today. For example, one business I know missed a loan repayment one month and quickly found themselves heading down the road of default.
“The pressure put on customers by RBS is neither fair nor morally acceptable. The old joke about banks pulling away the umbrella the minute it starts to rain appears to be very true in today’s world.
“The RBS tactic seems to have been to put swift and heavy pressure on some SMEs to get them liquidated. Then, hey presto, the bank comes along and captures and uses the assets for its own purposes.
“It appears that RBS set up its own company called West Register to leverage the situation, taking on properties and assets from distressed lending situations to avoid selling them on the open market at knockdown prices.”
Mr Green added: “Earlier this year, I was the in vanguard of leading complaints against the Bank of Ireland for the underhand tactics the bank used in raising mortgage tracker rates.
“We’ve lurched from banking crisis to banking crisis in recent years and it seems we still hear the ‘same old’ story of banks seeking to exploit their privileged position.”
“Obviously, I welcome any investigation of RBS. But I would also urge the Government to do more to shine a light on the custom and practice of some of our banks.
“I work very closely with young business people as Big Ideas role model for the Welsh Government. You would like to be in a position to talk to young budding entrepreneurs and assure them that the world of banking is full of people with strong ethical standards and a strong moral compass. Sadly, you cannot do that in the current climate.”

Deadline fast approaching for Big Ideas Wales

It's time to get on board for the Big Ideas Wales Challenge.
I'm helping to back the Welsh Government project to identify and support Wales’ young entrepreneurs of the future.
The November 27 deadline is fast approaching. There are 50 places up for grabs. If you know of a budding entrepreneur, then get them to apply - fast!
Below, is a press release on the Big Ideas wales Challenge

Deadline approaching fact on Big Ideas Wales Challenge launched to identify and support Wales’ young entrepreneurs of the future

One of the largest campaigns undertaken to identify and develop Wales’ young entrepreneurs of the future has been launched by the Welsh Government, backed by “Secret Millionaire”, Kevin Green and SuperStars entrepreneur, James Taylor.
Hundreds of young people throughout Wales are being invited to apply for 50 places on the Big Ideas Wales Challenge, launched by Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates AM.
The Challenge will scour Wales, interviewing hundreds of young people aged between 16 and 24 years of age, seeking their “big ideas” and helping to develop and cultivate 50 of these into commercial opportunities.
Entrepreneur James Taylor will act as an ambassador for the Challenge. He began his business, Superstars, with a bursary under the Welsh Government Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy (YES) in 2005 and has grown the business that now employs more than 180 people.
“As part of Welsh Government’s Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy (YES) this flagship challenge has been steered by entrepreneurs to support future entrepreneurs. I am pleased that James Taylor of Superstars will be the ambassador for this Challenge,” said Mr Skates.
“The engagement of the business community will be crucial, to provide peer support to these young entrepreneurs. We’d like to encourage business to pledge practical support to help them through the challenging period of starting a business.”
The business community - entrepreneurs, role models and others partners - will be invited to make individual pledges practical support to help these young people on their journey. This will complement business start up support already in place by Welsh Government and partners.
Speaking at the launch, James said: “We really need to inspire and harness the entrepreneurial talent in Wales. Through this Big Ideas Challenge we’ll take them through from initial auditions to a three day challenging bootcamp. At bootcamp they’ll work with entrepreneurs and experts to build their confidence in their ideas.”
“We hope the business community will back this challenge and pledge help. We’ll also back them during the first year through monthly board meetings, networking events and work shadowing opportunities. If we can identify future entrepreneurs now, then we can encourage some great business ideas for the future.”
The Challenge begins with the auditions throughout November at venues throughout Wales, backed by pledges from businesses, individuals and organisations to support the 50 young people, followed by the boot camp in January. Details and application can be found at www.bigideaswales.com. The deadline is November 27.
Businesses can pledge help that reflects the nature of the business, such as branding and PR packages, trade stands, office space, accounting packages, capital investment and essential equipment. Visit www.bigideaswales.com to pledge.
Also backing the challenge is self-made multi-millionaire and social entrepreneur Kevin Green, who featured on Channel 4’s “Secret Millionaire” programme.
“Young people have drive and ambition, as well as great ideas. The Big Ideas Wales Challenge is a way of developing and focusing those ideas into a reality and I’m pleased to be backing it,” he said.
The Challenge was launched at Cardiff Arms Park, home of the Cardiff Blues and Wales winger, Leigh Halfpenny, who has been named as the Most Inspirational Person in Wales in a survey* of 1,000 young people undertaken by Big Ideas Wales.
“It’s great to be seen as an inspirational person for young people. And when you consider it, business and sport is very closely linked.
“Not just in the commercial and management sense, but as an individual you have to strive and work towards the goals you want while working with a team to develop those opportunities and rewards. That’s mirrored in the business world where grit and determination can help you reach your goal.
“I wish the Big Ideas Challenge all the best and would urge young people to apply for the auditions and put their big ideas forward. Who knows where it might lead.”

Back to my roots to thank the Nuffield Trust team

Those who know my story will appreciate the importance of the Nuffield  scholarship in my life. Here's a press release which relates to the Nuffield conference now taking place at The Vale Resort near Cardiff.

Millionaire social entrepreneur and wealth coach Kevin Green has gone back to his roots to help repay a personal debt of gratitude to the Nuffield Trust.
Mr Green, 50, has been working with the latest group of Nuffield scholars at their UK conference at The Vale Resort near Cardiff.
“There were many factors that put me on the road to being a millionaire,” said Mr Green.
“But the Nuffield Trust played the key role in helping me work out what I wanted to do in life.”
Mr Green won a Nuffield Scholarship in 1999.
He used the bursary to travel and study the attitudes and personalities of high achievers.
Along the way, he interviewed Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson.
During the Nuffield study, he learned the simple principles for success and determined the common elements that contributed towards that success.
He bought his first property soon after, using credit cards to ‘bridge finance’ the deposit of a buy-to-let mortgage. After quickly renovating it and selling it at a profit, he bought a second. The rest is history. He is now the UK’s largest private sector landlord.
Mr Green has been spending time at The Vale with current Nuffield scholars, discussing the reports they present at the end of their scholarship.
He also spent time working with the new intake of scholars, helping them hone their presentation skills and teaching them how to secure interviews
Mr Green said: “I have always been very grateful to the Nuffield Trust for the help they gave me in starting on my journey to being a millionaire. Helping current and future scholars at the conference is my way of repaying a debt of gratitude and encouraging others to develop the passion, drive and commitment they will need on the journey to success.”
Mike Vacher, Director of the Nuffield Trust, said he was delighted to welcome the millionaire to the conference.
There are more than 400 booked for the two day conference.
The 2013 scholars will be giving presentations of their scholarship studies over next two days (Thursday and Friday).
Delegates and scholars have travelled from far afield. Many have not been to Wales before.
Extra activities during the conference include a trip to the Wales v Tonga game at The Millennium Stadium.

About the Nuffield Trust
Established as travelling awards for farmers in 1947 by the Nuffield Foundation, the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust is now an independent, industry-funded charitable organisation.
Approximately 20 awards are made each year to people for their self development and the wider benefit to their industry.
Scholarships are awarded to applicants who work within farming, food, horticulture, rural and associated industries or are in a position to influence those industries.
Applicants are aged between 22 and 45 years (the upper age limit is 45).
The Trust seeks people with very special qualities. There is no requirement for academic qualifications, but applicants will already be well established in their career and demonstrate a passion for the industry they work in and be three years post tertiary education.
The rewards of a Nuffield Scholarship are tremendous, not only for the individual but for their industry.
Scholarships are not awarded to anyone in full-time education or to further research projects.
Many industry organisations, individuals, companies or charitable bodies sponsor the awards. Weblink –

My views on the Welsh Government's Housing Bill

Welsh Government Housing Minister Carl Sargeant was making the headlines earlier this week with the launch of the new Housing Bill for Wales.
My reaction to the announcement is in the following press release -

The UK’s biggest private sector landlord, Burry Port-based Kevin Green, has welcomed the Welsh Government’s proposed new legislation covering housing in Wales.
The Welsh Government has just published its first Housing Bill since it gained full law-making powers in 2011. At the heart of the Bill is the twin aim of tackling the alleged “questionable practices” of some landlords and the blight of empty homes.
Mr Green, 50, said the broad thrust of the Bill would be welcomed by the vast majority of landlords who operated with a social conscience.
“It’s the old adage which says that if you are doing your job properly in the first place, you have nothing to fear,” he said.
Mr Green has properties throughout the UK. Most are in South Wales, but he also has properties as far afield as Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“I know many other major landlords and they work every hard to make sure the accommodation they provide is up to the correct standard. They also apply fair and reasonable rents and you would never accuse them of exploiting their tenants.
“Regrettably, however, there are always a few bad apples.
“I have not been able to study the fine detail of the Bill, but my guess is that it will want to tackle unscrupulous landlords and family homelessness.
Homelessness is an issue close to Mr Green’s heart.
“I was homeless myself in 1984. I know with first-hand experience what it is like. Any measures which reduce homelessness are to be welcomed.”
Welsh Government Housing Minister Carl Sargeant said a decent, affordable home was a vital part of everyone’s life.
The Welsh Government's White Paper - which sets out its intentions for the bill - includes a proposal that would see private landlords having to sign a mandatory register before they could take on tenants
It also described the private rented sector as having “extremes” of good and bad practice.
Although there are good landlords, it said some tenants were put in difficult situations by unscrupulous operators, with many enduring “poor conditions, insecurity and, sometimes, threats of eviction”.
“The latter, combined with the lack of other options, means that many people, often vulnerable people, put up with the questionable practices of some landlords and lettings and management agents,” the White Paper said.
Other measures in the White Paper include a pledge to tackle the blight of empty properties by giving local authorities the power to increase council tax on properties empty for longer than a year.
The Bill is expected to set a goal of ending family homelessness in Wales by the end of the decade.
Landlord and social entrepreneur Mr Green said most landlords would have nothing to fear from a mandatory register.
“Most of us are on ‘the books’ of local authorities and work closely with councils and housing agencies to make sure we apply proper standards, so most respected and caring landlords will have nothing to fear.
“I make sure in my business that we work very closely with homeless charities such as Shelter, Women’s Aid and The Wallich.
“We do care passionately about the welfare of our tenants.
“We have a very widely publicised issue with the Government’s current changes to the benefit system and Universal Credit. But that is a separate issue to this Housing Bill.
“It might be a pity that some extra regulation is needed in the housing market, but the bulk of decent landlords will have nothing to fear from the Bill, as I see it.”

Wonderful evening at Claridges in the company of HRH The Princess Royal

It's been a wonderful evening at Claridges in London in the company of HRH The Princess Royal, Prince Anne.
The occasion was the Carers Trust first anniversary dinner and I was invited by my good friend Hilary Devey CBE, of Dragon's Den fame on the BBC.
Hilary is a fellow 'Secret 'Millionaire' .
It was a very swish event, featuring a performance by the celebrated Michael Ball.
Sadly, Hilary was not well enough to attend.
It was lovely to meet and chat to The Princess Royal.
Those of you who know me well will appreciate that I love my donkeys.
With The Princess Royal's equestrian background, that was an obvious topic of conversation!
I was happy to put my hand in my pocket to support the Carers Trust, knowing how dear it is to Hilary's heart.
I chipped in £500 in sponsorship for a Kilimanjaro climb and bought two holidays in the auction - one for £4500 to Barbados and another to Tobago for £3200.
The auctioneer was the novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer.
It's fair to say he was a very smooth operator and he worked the room brilliantly to raise as much cash as possible on the night for the Carers Trust.
Trying to keep a running total was difficult, but I think the evening raised more than £150,000 for the charity.
The lovely people at the Carers Trust sent me a splendid thank-you note with some smoked salmon and chocolates as an appreciation for my contribution to the night.
Here are some photos of the night -

Looking forward to the launch of Big Ideas Wales Challenge today

I'm really looking forward to the launch of the Big Ideas Wales Challenge today - and to taking to the pitch with rugby great Leigh Halfpenny.
Here's the Welsh Government press release about the event -

Big Ideas Wales Challenge launched to identify and support Wales’ young entrepreneurs of the future

One of the largest campaigns undertaken to identify and develop Wales’ young entrepreneurs of the future has been launched by the Welsh Government today (Wednesday, 23rd October 2013), backed by “Secret Millionaire”, Kevin Green and SuperStars entrepreneur, James Taylor.
Hundreds of young people throughout Wales are being invited to apply for 50 places on the Big Ideas Wales Challenge, launched by Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates AM.

Interesting look at crowd funding operation at Caerphilly

Took time out today to respond to an invitation to visit to new crowd funding operation in Caerphilly.
Ice Dragons Ltd is based at Britannia House, Caerphilly, in the Welsh Ice innovation centre.
My PA Suzanne Rawlins came along for the fact-finding mission and we were given a very extensive tour of the ICE operation.
We spoke to a number of start-up businesses, were shown the different offices and the different levels of membership.
There was great enthusiasm throughout, with many varied businesses on site, including interior design, magazine, games design, software design & graphic design.
A big thank-you goes to the ICE team for their time and their hospitality.

Photo left to right - Gwyn Thomas (Insight Business Intelligence), Anthony Record (Co-founder), Gareth Jones (Captain of Innovation, ICE), Mandy Weston (DR Know, ICE), Kevin Green, Alison Lavelle (Master of Skills, ICE), Suzanne Rawlins, Kevin Green's PA.

Here is a short brief on Ice Dragons Ltd.
Ice Dragons Ltd. is an FCA authorised and regulated crowd-funding (in exchange for equity) platform, (reference number 583315) based at Britannia House, Caerphilly in the Welsh Ice Innovation Centre.
We are members of the UK Crowd funding Association and abide by their code of conduct. www.ukcfa.org.uk/code-of-practice
Background
A Federation of Small Businesses survey revealed that in 2007, 4% of small businesses received outright rejections from banks, jumping to 27% in 2011. Those that received the full amount of borrowing dropped from 85% to 58%. Start up finance is definitely becoming harder to find so alternative sources are needed. Launched in the U.K. in 2011 equity crowd funding fills a gap by giving investors the opportunity to invest and become shareholders in start up and expanding businesses. As banks have retreated from this sector equity crowd funding sites are helping entrepreneurs secure both finance and motivated shareholders, rich in ideas. Ice Dragons is raising money to support entrepreneurs who in turn flourish, creating both employment and a return for shareholders.
How it works
A large on-line community of high net worth individuals and sophisticated investors is built (the Crowd) who will invest small amounts from £100 with no upper limit and so together, as a crowd, provide a successful funding for exciting and viable ideas. The crowd tends to be hobby and enthusiastic investors, and everyone is warned of the very high risk nature of this type of investment.

Smashing day helping Dawn Evans at Ajuda Ltd in Cardiff

Wonderful day helping one of my 'Kevin Green Wealth' pupils, Dawn Evans, in Cardiff.
Here is the official press release about the Ajuda Training Academy -

Secret Millionaire opens Ajuda Training Academy

Kevin Green, star of Channel 4 show Secret Millionaire, was on hand this week to officially open a new training centre in Cardiff.
The self-made multi-millionaire and social entrepreneur cut the ribbon on Ajuda Ltd’s new Training Academy at Mount Stuart Square in Cardiff Bay.
Set up four years ago by managing director Dawn Evans, Ajuda provides a range of courses in first aid training, manual handling, asbestos awareness, fire safety, food hygiene and lifeguard training to businesses and individuals.
The company now employs four staff and more than 30 associate trainers, and has recently seen the 20,000 delegate complete one of its courses.
The Training Academy, at 15 Mount Stuart Square, is over three floors and includes specialist suites for both academic-based courses and practical hands-on training.
Ajuda, which has moved to Cardiff Bay from the Jasmine Enterprise Centre in Ely, which is being developed as a community hub by Cardiff council, also has a satellite office in Ruthin, Denbighshire.
Mr Green agreed to open Ajuda’s new base after Mrs Evans enrolled in the Kevin Green Wealth 90-Day business coaching programme earlier this year.
“Having started with just myself working from home and fitting in training around my family commitments, Ajuda has gone from strength to strength over the past four years because of the quality courses we offer and the expertise of the staff we now employ,” said Mrs Evans.
“With this move to the Ajuda Training Academy, we can offer specialist facilities that will give both businesses and individuals access to the must up-to-date knowledge and practical support available.
“I am delighted that Kevin agreed to open our new base. As a successful entrepreneur himself, he was able to see how the hard work of my team and I has built a successful business that is continuing to grow by providing excellent service and courses of the highest quality.”
Mr Green added: “Dawn's enthusiasm and determination to succeed is the main reason that Ajuda is achieving significant growth as a training company.
“Dawn believes in putting the customer first, which is essential in any service business.
“I'm a passionate supporter of the entrepreneurial spirit in Wales and am delighted to be able to support Dawn on a landmark day for Ajuda.”

Great welcome from the Hyde Housing team in London

I had a great welcome from the team at the Hyde Housing Group when I attended their special group development seminar staged in central London.
The Hyde Housing Group is one of the UK's leading and award-winning providers of housing.
Here are some key facts about the group -
  • £260m turnover
  • £2.9bn assets
  • 95,000 residents
  • 49,000 homes
  • 1,200 staff
  • 45 years old
As you can see, this is a big enterprise.
I was delighted to accept their invitation to be the keynote speaker at their group business  development seminar and 'away day'.
They were a great bunch of people and seemed to quickly grasp my messages about embracing change and keeping passionate about their valuable work.

Thanks go to group business development director David Gannicott for his great welcome.
The event was staged at Prospero House not far from The Shard in London.
During the afternoon, the Hyde team members went off on a special 'treasure hunt' around central London.
I helped a couple of the enterprising competitors tick a couple boxes - the ones for 'get a photo with a famous person' and 'get a famous person's autograph'!
I also made one young lady's day by talking on the phone to her Welsh mum!

The day I was reunited with 'Secret Millionaire' colleague Hilary Devey!

Wonderful occasion today.
I was reunited with my 'Secret Millionaire' team-mate Hilary Devey CBE.
The wonderful Hilary was the star guest at the Cardiff Business Show organised by Introbiz at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Here's the press release from the event . . .

'Secret Millionaires' share stage at Cardiff Business Show

Two 'Secret Millionaires' - one of them from Burry Port - were back on stage at the Cardiff Business Show yesterday.
Former Dragons Den star and entrepreneur Hilary Devey CBE joined West Wales social entrepreneur and property expert Kevin Green at the show at the Cardiff City Stadium.
"It was great to meet up with Hilary again," said Green, 50.
"We both took part in the Secret Millionaire series for Channel 4 and I have since tried to help Hilary with her fund-raising work for the Stroke Association.
Ms Devey, a patron of the Stoke Association having suffered a stroke in 2009 which paralysed an arm and partly paralysed a leg, spoke of its devastating effect when she addressed the audience at the business show.
"Everyone was moved by Hilary's comments during a very lively question and answer session," said Green.
"Sadly, Hilary was unable to attend a gala charity dinner in the evening for the Stroke Association, held at The Vale Resort.
"But she sent a video message to the evening dinner guests to explain how she had to rush off to Skipton in Yorkshire to do some filming for a forthcoming Channel 4 programme.
"Plainly, Hilary has had to battle hard to combat the stroke and everyone who attended the business show was impressed by her bravery and fortitude in making it to the stage."
The business show and the gala charity dinner in the evening were both organised by Tracey and Paul Smolinski, of the Introbiz business network.
During her Q and A, Ms Devey revealed that her 'eureka' business moment, which led to her forming her palletised freight distribution business Pallex, came to her on a visit to Wales.
"It was in 1996 when the idea developed in my mind, so you can say the embryo was conceived here. Now we have several depots in and around Wales and lot of our work is derived here."

Photo 1: Kevin Green gives Hilary Devey a good old-fashioned Welsh 'cwtsh' welcome.

Back in the groove . . .

I'm back in the groove very quickly today.
On my way to Wiltshire shortly for the Wiltshire Property & Entrepreneurial Network (PEN) meeting.
There's a big 'United Kingdom' feel to the gig tonight as I will be sharing the stage with John Dallas and Heather Mortimer.

John Dallas
John Dallas is from Glasgow Property Sourcing and Lettings Agency
After a career in the Army and later in International Marketing, John took his first property course in Aberdeen in 2000, with three properties in his portfolio. Over the next five years, John went on to become a trainer and property mentor (coach). Based on his experience, in both the commercial and development sectors of the property market he co-wrote several advanced training programmes.
In 2008 he was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and during the early treatment was over dosed with radiation. His latest challenge (in late 2012) was renal failure which has resulted in him attending dialysis three days a week.
However, given his challenges he finds time to support Scottish Property Sourcing, from behind his computer, where most if not all of our property sourcing research is done.

Heather Mortimer
Heather Mortimer is an award-winning businesswoman, successful entrepreneur and property investor, with more than 20 years’ experience as a market trader in Glasgow.
Heather attended her property training with Whitney later Tigrent in 2006. On completion of her mentorship and with 30 properties in her portfolio she opened N&L properties, a letting agency in the east end of Glasgow. (N&L are the names of her two sons Nathan & Liam)
As an active member of both the National Landlords Association and the Scottish Association, her finger is always on the pulse of ever changing regulation.
Most recently, Heather has been assisting new landlords pointing them to the appropriate professionals and sign posting them BTL investment opportunities.
In 2010 she started to devote time and energy working with Glasgow District Council and various local housing associations including shelter. Developing a housing strategy ideally suited to Central Scotland.
In August 2012 she opened the Queens Park Business Centre locating her second N&L Properties office there (N&L South Side) 12 months ahead of plan. Now with seven staff and almost 300 properties on the books, the time was right for a new challenge.
Last summer Heather was approached by a Scottish businessman working in Africa if she could take on a small project and source three properties for him.
The success of the project and her ability to build trust and confidence via the phone and internet (the African investor never saw the properties) led to the trial of a unique sourcing experience, Scottish Property Sourcing.

Lovely welcome home

There was a lovely 'welcome back' waiting for me in Burry Port after my trip to Hong Kong to celebrate my 50th birthday.
Team Green staff members and family had some lovely cards waiting for me!

Monday 23 September 2013

Thanks for all your birthday wishes

A big thank-you goes to everyone who sent me birthday wishes on the occasion of my big Five-O!
I celebrated with a week in the wonderful city of Hong Kong.
Met a few characters, including this bird!

Unfortunately, I couldn't bring her home!
Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, this is being written from the airport lounge.
I am waiting for my 'flatbed' seat for the marathon 11-hour journey home.
Time to get some 'Zeds' in and some well-deserved sleep.
This week is going to be mega-busy.
I have a speaking engagement in Wiltshire tomorrow, a Shelter Cymru conference midweek, the Cardiff Business Show on Thursday, a speaking gig with Dragons' Den star Hilary Devey on Thursday evening and the Swansea Bay Volunteer Awards on Friday night.
Oh . . . and I'll try and fit a bit of business in between!
Once again, many thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes.

Looking forward to meeting some special youngsters

I'm looking forward to making special visit to Thatcham in Berkshire on Friday to give a talk to some special children and young people.
The event has been arranged by my friend Fiona Matthews.
Here is the press release for the event -

On Friday 13th September 2013 Kevin Green, star of Channel 4’s ‘Secret Millionaire’, will come to Thatcham to give a talk to Children 1st West Berkshire and young people in the area, including local school students, about his life story and his path to success.
He will then visit Cornerstone, the house rented by Children 1st West Berkshire for the young people the charity supports and will mentor the residents.
Chris Rowell, one of Kevin’s top coaches at Kevin Green Wealth, will also be visiting and will mentor the staff and Trustees of the charity on good business practice.
Kevin was a dairy farmer in Wales who, following the death of his sister from Lupus aged 20, wanted to make more of his life. In 1999 he won a scholarship to travel the world to interview champions of industry, including Sir Richard Branson and Bill Gates, to ascertain what the difference in their mindset is that makes them successful. Following this he decided to go into property and, having bought his first house in 1999, he is now one of the UK’s largest private landlords - his property portfolio runs into the hundreds (647 houses, at the last count!) - a social entrepreneur and a self-made multi-millionaire. The 49-year-old dyslexic was homeless in 1984.
He is a Big Ideas Wales role model for the Welsh Government and helps inspire young people in schools and universities on how to start a business.
Kevin loves to keep fit by water skiing, walking and running. He ran the London Marathon in 2010 raising money for Amber Foundation (reform centre for young offenders).
His ‘can do’ qualities have catapulted him into worldwide demand as a speaker at conferences, dinners and seminars.
Kevin has travelled throughout the UK, Asia, Australia and New Zealand in the past year and has shared the stage with Sir Richard Branson and former United States president Bill Clinton.
Kevin is a regular commentator on property and business ideas for a cross-section of UK and international media outlets, in print, on TV, on radio and online.
Kevin is an ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and has personally contributed more than £300,000.
He is a Patron of The Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust and a member of The Professional Speaking Association.
Kevin loves to educate, motivate and inspire others on how to start in business, how to make money fast and how to become rich and his passion and enthusiasm is quite infectious.
His down to earth approach is often referred to by those who know him as ‘exactly what it says on the tin’.
More information about Kevin and Chris can be found at www.kevingreen.co.uk and www.chris-rowell.com.
Children 1st West Berkshire are extremely excited that we have this wonderful opportunity and very grateful to Kevin and Chris for agreeing to visit us.

About Children 1st West Berkshire:
Children 1st West Berkshire charity was started in 2008 for the benefit of children and young adults who are or have been in care in West Berkshire.
Its purpose is not just to keep them safe and healthy; its ambition, and we are determined to fulfil it, is for them to be happy, to achieve by developing their own potential and become complete and rounded human beings who are a full part of society. This is our goal for each and every child we support. Children in care need all help possible to overcome their difficulties, to help them on the road to health, happiness and success and enable them to have a good and promising future.
We are committed to:
· encourage aspirations among young people in care.
· treat each child as a unique individual.
· give practical support and ongoing emotional and psychological support to help them achieve their ambitions.
· ensure that each child's specific and specialised needs are properly met.
· do all that we can so they will flourish rather than fail.
· provide support and activities which develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
Stability is the foundation for any child's development and yet the experience for many children is one of instability and unpredictable change. Some see as many as 30 social workers or go through 9 or 10 care placements within a few years. As a consequence of all this many of those leaving the care system are uneducated, untrained, unqualified and unable effectively to equip themselves to contribute to their own personal fulfilment. There is poor preparation for leaving care and too many children leaving care inappropriately and have a lack of suitable accommodation when they do. They do not have the skills, personal responsibility or discipline to be able to cope with living independently.
CFWB rents Cornerstone, a five bedroom house in Thatcham, from the Greenham Trust and has five residents sharing it, one of which is a ‘carer’ figure. Each of the residents is also allocated a Trustee who they can talk to, ask for advice and turn to for help. Children First West Berkshire aims to have more houses to help more children leaving care.

New Zealand speaking date booked

Some excellent news this morning -
I have just been  picked as the keynote speaker for the Property Investors Federation Conference in New Zealand next October.
It isn't the first time for me to speak in New Zealand, but I'm looking forward to it as it is such a great country with such wonderful aspirational people.
The event will be in Canterbury.

Like father, like son . . .

It must be something in the genes!
My son Carwyn has his sights firmly set on the world of business.
At 17, he has just ordered a tow bar for his car and business cards for his Green's Services lawn mowing and garden maintenance start-up.
And not content with starting up one business, he has his eyes firmly set on Business No2.
Carwyn is planning a new venture selling ice-cream.
He's doing most of the work himself, but I did give him a small hand this week in picking up this ice cream stall from Leeds.
The 'winter project' will be refurbishing the stall ready for the next summer season.
All the family are backing Carwyn to make a success of both businesses.

Fab time in The Netherlands

I had a fabulous time in The Netherlands as one of the guest speakers at a major personal development seminar.
'Weekend with the Masters' was a two-day seminar organised by my good friend Arnout Van Der Swaluw (pictured below), owner at Succesgids (Success Guides) and promoter of high level business and personal development seminars.
It took place on Saturday and Sunday (September 7 and 8) at the Claus Event Center in Hoofddorp, which is close to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.
Other speakers at the event included André Kuipers, the first Dutchman in space, with two astronaut missions under his belt; Netherlands TV presenter Vivian Reijs; Marcus de Maria, a respected trainer in the field of welfare and investment, and internet expert Eelco de Boer.
I was speaking to some of my favourite themes - repossession rescue, repairing credit history and how to set up a business.
The feedback was great and I was voted the best speaker of the first day of the seminar.
In fact, it was so successful that the Kevin Green Wealth team will be going back to help train 29 delegates from the seminar.
We will be staging a three-day property and business success training seminar in Amsterdam on November 8, 9 and 10.
The aim will be to help delegates achieve significant profits  - and to have fun on the way!
The delegates represent various business sectors and each person will have quality time with my team.
We will assess their personality type, their hobbies and their skillsets and match businesses to the appropriate experts who can help them improve their skills and businesses.
The delegates are from all backgrounds - a third are couples seeking to improve their business skills.
Some of the delegates want to improve the existing structure of their business, some want to open an additional business and anotherr third of the group are currently in employment but want to set up their own business for their future financial security.
I will be presenting for the three days at the next seminar and my colleague Chris Rowell will be doing a section on marketing, including optimising social media and online presence through blogs and websites.
